Not all LED bulbs are the same: Pick the right one for you

Look around your home or business premises and count how many lightbulbs there are. Now, if those bulbs aren’t LED ones, start to calculate the amount of savings you are missing out on due to outdated, energy guzzling bulbs. More efficient at transforming energy into light, LEDs use about 90% less power than an incandescent bulb. Although it is worth the change, not all LED bulbs are the same and so you need to pick the right one for you and the space you want to illuminate.

W v L and K

You may be used to buying a 100w or a 60w bulb, but Light Emitting Diodes (LED) bulbs measure brightness in lumens (lm) instead of watts (w). The equivalent to a 100w is 1,600lm, 75w is 1,100lm, and 40w is 450lm. LED bulbs are also measured by the ‘light appearance’ or colour temperature – Kelvin (K). A warm light needs 2700 to 3000K, a more natural cooler light is 5000K.

Enclosed fixtures and dimmers

A LED bulb can last for decades compared to the few years an incandescent bulb will last. However, LEDs generate heat that needs to dissipate, or it will damage the bulbs electronics. Light fixtures that are enclosed may not allow the heat to escape making them fail well before they should. Luckily, LED manufacturers have created bulbs especially designed for enclosed fixtures that endure higher temperatures. Just like with enclosed fixtures, not all LED bulbs will work in dimmers. You can buy bulbs that are compatible with dimmer switches, but some switches are just too old to work with the LED dimmer bulbs.

Smart LEDs

As technology advances, we are seeing more homes and business connected to Smart appliances. These can be run from a mobile phone or via a voice-activated home assist system. By switching out your old lightbulbs for Smart LED bulbs you can control your lights through the touch of a button or by voice command. Imagine driving up to your dark home, turning the house lights on from your car, and carrying your sleeping child inside without having to search for light switches with full hands. If you’ve ever grappled with this situation before, then you know the struggle is real.

Once you have an idea of what kind of light fixtures you have, how much they need to brighten the room, whether they are to be connected to a dimmer or Smart system, and how many you need of which type, then it’s time to go shopping. You want a reputable dealer like RS, where buying in bulk is no problem and you can see the shape, size, and characteristics of each bulb. If you have any questions you can speak to one of their friendly staff through Live Chat or by phone.

Whether you are running a business or a home, long-term money saving can be as easy as changing your lightbulbs. Switch them out for the more durable, longest lasting, environmentally friendly, and energy efficient LED bulbs.
