How to connect jumper cables and how to jump a car

How to jump a car: Hook up in a weak battery

Connect the positive cable to the positive terminal of the weak battery. Connect the negative terminal in the engine for the correct way to connect the jumper cables.

How to jump from car steps:

  1. Place the positive (red or yellow) cable on the positive terminal of the weak battery. Make sure the other head does not touch the car’s engine or any part of the body or you may get a dangerous spark.
  2. Place the other end of the good battery on the positive terminal of the good battery.
  3. Say negative cable (black) in the negative terminal of a good battery.
  4. Carpet the other end of the negative cable to a clean metal part of the engine (such as a bolt head or bracket) with a weak battery. Keep the clamp away from batteries, any moving parts and the fuel system.

Caution: Do not connect the negative cable with the weak terminal of the weak battery when jumping the car battery! This common mistake can ignite hydrogen gas directly on the battery. Battery explosions can cause serious injury. Even if you have already stepped back, use the metal engine part when jumping.

Now start the car with a good battery, let it charge the weak battery for minutes, then try to start the car with a weak battery. If it does not start, turn off both ignitions, make sure the cable clamps are making contact, and then try again. When a car with a weak battery starts, wait (about 15 to 15 seconds or so) to make sure it doesn’t stall.

Disconnect the cables in reverse order: First, remove the negative cable from the car from which you jumped, then remove the negative cable from the car with a good battery. Then remove the positive cable from the car with good battery life (do not attach the ground part of either car with the clamp of the positive cable). Finally, remove the positive cable from the car with a weak battery. Remember, both engines are running (with some luck!), So be careful when you remove the cables to avoid belts, fans, and other moving parts.
