Whether you are planning for a PC upgrade or planning a PC build from scratch, you’re going to want to be familiar with the different types of motherboards available. From the various shapes and sizes to the different connectors and sockets, motherboards are a diverse part of the PC community.

Read on to learn more about the most common types of motherboards and why they matter.

Standard ATX

ATX motherboard is the most commonly used specification. It is a full configuration and expansion ready. A modern entry-level ATX motherboard will usually have PCIE slots, memory slots, and SATA port for expandability.

It will also come with the usual output slot for display and audio. External device ports are always available such as USB ports.

In choosing motherboard types, you should also consider its CPU support. Intel motherboards are designed to support Intel processors, and on the other hand, AMD Motherboards are built to support AMD CPUs. Both motherboards, however are capable of expandability and upgrade.

Micro-ATX

This is a smaller version of a full ATX Board. It has the same width but is smaller in height. This is perfect for any single GPU build and will fit in a standard ATX case or smaller.

This type of board also carries the basic peripheral port and expansion ports but not as many as a full ATX. the price is also a bit less than its full counterpart

Mini-ITX

If a micro ATX dimension is 9.6″x 9.6″, The mini- ITX board is somewhere around 6.7″x6.7″.  This size is ideal to any small form factor computer case. will usually have 2 lanes for RAM and single PCIE slots.

Mini-ITX are also more expensive than the micro ATX because of its demand and versatility of use.

Flex-ATX

Flex-ATX is a motherboard specification that came from  Micro-ATX. Its size is around 9″ × 7.5″ and has the same I/O Ports as Micro ATX. It also comes with limited expandability.

Technically it is a modified specification of a Micro-ATX design.

Regular and Gaming Motherboards

Some people also distinguish the type of motherboard to be a regular motherboard and a gaming specs.

Regular motherboards have expansion slots that are only limited to its intended use and sometimes with a built-in graphics processor and few slots for RAM and SATA.

Gaming motherboards are designed for gaming and are highly expandable. These boards may have multiple PICE slots for Multi graphics processing purposes, four or more RAM slots for memory expansions, and many more.
