Why it’s used

Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain.

Tramadol can be used as part of a combination therapy. This means you may need to take it with other medications.

How it works

Tramadol is in a class of drugs called opioid agonists. A drug class is a group of drugs that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

Tramadol works by changing the way the brain detects pain. Tramadol is similar to substances in the brain called endorphins. Endorphins bind to receptors (parts of cells that receive a certain substance). The receptors then decrease the pain messages your body sends to your brain. Tramadol works in a similar way to reduce the amount of pain your brain thinks you are having.

Proper Use

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more, do not take more often, and do not take longer than prescribed by your doctor. If too much of this drug is taken for a long time, it can cause addiction (causing mental or physical dependence) or cause an overdose.

It is very important to understand the rules of the REMS opioid analgesic program to prevent addiction, abuse and misuse of the combination of paracetamol and codeine. This drug must be accompanied by a drug guide. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Please re-read it each time you receive a top-up in case there is new information. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

If you think this medicine does not work well after taking it for a few weeks, do not increase the dose. Instead, check with your doctor. Remove the tablet from the blister by peeling off the foil and taking out the tablet. Do not push the tablet through the foil. Don’t break it, crush it, or chew it. Put the tablet in your mouth. It should melt quickly. After the tablet has dissolved, swallow or take a sip of water.
